Start with the load
A single blanket, bath mat or other absorbent item can collect on one side of the tub. Pause the cycle, distribute the load evenly and try again. Avoid packing items tightly or washing one heavy item alone.
Check the installation
The washer should sit firmly on all four feet and remain level. Flexible flooring, loose feet or shipping bolts left in a newly installed front-load washer can cause severe vibration.
Common mechanical causes
Worn suspension components
Top-load suspension rods and front-load shocks control tub movement. Wear can allow the basket to bounce excessively or strike the cabinet.
Bearing or basket damage
Grinding, roaring, looseness between the inner and outer tub, or a basket that sits unevenly can indicate more substantial internal damage.
Loose or worn drive components
Pulleys, belts and other drive parts can create rhythmic knocking, scraping or clicking that changes with spin speed.
What to record before service
- The type and size of the load
- Whether the problem occurs during sensing, washing or high-speed spin
- Any error code
- A short video of the sound or movement, if safe to record
